As tensions over trade, Taiwan, technology, and global influence intensify, the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping may determine the future balance of power between Washington and Beijing. By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj | Sulaimani, Iraq | 13 May 2026 — Kurdish Policy Analysis "We don't have permanent allies and we don't have permanent enemies, only our interests are permanent, and we have to follow them." – Henry John Temple. The root of the current Strait of Hormuz tensions is not only about shipping routes or oil prices, but also about the final collapse of the historical US concept towards Beijing. However, the 2025 National Security Strategy, released by the White House in November, says this was a historic mistake because China used the assets it accumulated to strengthen itself and compete with the West, not to become their partner. Barzani Urges Caution on Iraq Presidency Vote, Warns Against “Imposed” Solutions

Barzani warns Iraq’s power brokers: rushing the presidential vote could “deepen divisions.” Calls for full political consensus before any move.

SULAIMANIYAH, March 29 Kurdish Policy Analysis— Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani has called for greater political consultation ahead of a planned parliamentary session to elect Iraq’s next president, warning that rushed or imposed decisions risk deepening divisions at a sensitive moment.

In a letter dated March 28 and addressed to leaders of Iraq’s Shi’ite Coordination Framework, Barzani said the push to convene parliament for a presidential vote “requires further consultation,” stressing the need to respect the political weight of all components in the system based on their electoral representation.

“Attempts to push things forward or impose them will lead to counterproductive results and deeper divisions, which the country does not need at this delicate and sensitive stage,” the letter said.

The message underscores growing tensions among Iraq’s political blocs over the timing and mechanism for forming the next government, a process closely tied to electing a president — a key constitutional step in appointing a prime minister.

Below is a copy of the statement of written in Arabic language. I have summarized its content as below and identified his key arguments regarding the formation of Iraq's next government

Content of the Letter

The document, bearing the name and signature of Masoud Barzani and dated March 28, is addressed to leaders of the Coordination Framework and the Iraqi political establishment.

Written in Arabic and Kurdish, the letter:

  • Opens with a formal greeting and references Iraq’s current “sensitive and critical stage".
  • Emphasizes the importance of national consensus and adherence to constitutional mechanisms.
  • Calls for dialogue and coordination among all political forces, particularly regarding the election of the president and formation of the government.
  • Warns explicitly that rushing decisions or imposing outcomes could destabilize the political process and harm national unity.
  • Stresses that power-sharing must reflect electoral weight, signaling Kurdish concerns over marginalization.
  • Concludes with a call for responsibility, restraint, and cooperation to safeguard Iraq’s stability.

The tone of the letter is measured but firm, positioning Barzani as advocating a negotiated settlement rather than a rapid parliamentary vote.
