U.S. Issues Stark Warning: Iran-Backed Militias May Target American Universities Across Iraq


     Embassy urges immediate evacuation as missile, drone, and kidnapping threats intensify, with U.S.-linked campuses and civilian sites in the crosshairs.

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq, March 29 (Reuters) — The U.S. Embassy in Iraq has warned that Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups may be planning attacks on American-affiliated universities and other U.S.-linked targets across Iraq, urging U.S. citizens to leave the country immediately.

In a security alert, the embassy said institutions such as the American University of Baghdad, the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, and the American University of Kurdistan could be at risk, along with other sites perceived to have ties to the United States.

The warning comes amid heightened regional tensions and follows what U.S. officials describe as a pattern of attacks by Iran-backed militias on American personnel, facilities and interests throughout Iraq, including in the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.

“Iran and Iran-aligned terrorist militias pose an escalating threat to public safety in Iraq,” the embassy said, adding that potential targets include diplomatic facilities, universities, businesses, energy infrastructure, airports and hotels frequented by foreigners.

The embassy cautioned that armed groups have previously carried out missile, drone and rocket attacks, and may also attempt kidnappings of U.S. nationals. Iraqi airspace remains at risk from ongoing aerial threats, it said.

Despite the warning, the embassy said the U.S. mission remains operational under an “ordered departure” status to assist Americans seeking to leave. However, it advised citizens not to approach the embassy in Baghdad or the consulate in Erbil due to security risks.

The advisory reiterates a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning for Iraq — the highest level issued by the U.S. State Department — and calls on Americans currently in the country to depart immediately.

The Iraqi government has faced criticism for failing to prevent attacks launched from its territory against U.S. and regional interests, according to the statement.

U.S. officials said they are continuing to monitor the situation and provide updates on departure options, stressing that the safety of American citizens remains their top priority.
