Experts say artificial intelligence is now embedded in parts of what military doctrine calls the “kill chain”—the sequence from identifying a target to assessing the outcome of a strike—raising both operational efficiency and ethical concerns.

From battlefield sensors to algorithmic analysis

Modern military operations rely on enormous volumes of data collected from satellites, drones, radar systems and intercepted communications.

Systems such as the Maven Smart System, developed with involvement from U.S. defense technology firms including Palantir, are designed to integrate these inputs into a unified operational picture. The system uses machine learning to detect patterns, prioritize potential targets and assist commanders in planning missions.

Defense officials emphasize that such systems are intended to support, not replace, human decision-making.

However, analysts note that the speed at which these systems process and present targeting information has fundamentally altered the tempo of military operations.

A key concern is a phenomenon described by researchers as “automation bias,” where human operators are more likely to trust algorithmic recommendations under time constraints.

Elke Schwarz, a researcher in military ethics and artificial intelligence, has warned that this dynamic raises unresolved questions about responsibility in modern warfare.

If an AI system suggests a target and a human operator approves it quickly under pressure, determining accountability in the event of an error becomes complex.

Errors, data quality, and civilian risk

Analysts also stress that AI systems are only as reliable as the data they process.

In fast-moving conflict environments, outdated or incomplete intelligence can lead to misidentification of targets.

Reports referenced in German media have cited incidents in which strikes may have hit civilian infrastructure located near military facilities, highlighting the risks of imperfect data feeding automated analysis systems.

Such cases underscore a broader concern: faster decision-making does not necessarily equal more accurate decision-making.

The Washington Post has reported that large language models have been tested in combination with battlefield analysis systems to improve simulation and monitoring capabilities, though official confirmation remains limited.

The rise of AI-assisted warfare has intensified debate over international humanitarian law and accountability frameworks.

Key unresolved questions include:

  • Who is legally responsible for AI-influenced targeting errors?
