As tensions over trade, Taiwan, technology, and global influence intensify, the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping may determine the future balance of power between Washington and Beijing. By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj | Sulaimani, Iraq | 13 May 2026 — Kurdish Policy Analysis "We don't have permanent allies and we don't have permanent enemies, only our interests are permanent, and we have to follow them." – Henry John Temple. The root of the current Strait of Hormuz tensions is not only about shipping routes or oil prices, but also about the final collapse of the historical US concept towards Beijing. However, the 2025 National Security Strategy, released by the White House in November, says this was a historic mistake because China used the assets it accumulated to strengthen itself and compete with the West, not to become their partner. For many years, the United States alone maintained maritime security; The fifth US ship in Manama, Bahrain, worked only to keep o...

Iran Deploys Ghadir-Class Mini Submarines in Hormuz as Tensions Surge Over Maritime “Red Lines”

Kurdish Policy Analysis / SULAIMANI, IRAQ--Shallow-water submarine fleet positioned near strategic chokepoints, signaling heightened deterrence posture in the Persian Gulf amid escalating naval risk dynamics.

Iran has reportedly deployed Ghadir-class midget submarines in the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormuz, signaling a hardened maritime deterrence posture amid rising regional tensions and strategic chokepoint risks.

 — Iran has deployed a significant number of its coastal submarine assets in the Persian Gulf and near one of the world’s most sensitive maritime chokepoints, escalating concerns over naval security in the region.

According to Iranian-aligned reporting, the Islamic Republic has positioned its fleet of Ghadir-class midget submarine across key maritime zones, including waters adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz.

The deployment comes amid heightened regional tensions and renewed emphasis on deterrence in the Persian Gulf, a critical corridor for global energy shipments passing through the Persian Gulf.

Military messaging accompanying the deployment states that the submarines have been instructed to respond to any perceived intrusion into Iranian territorial waters with immediate action. The Ghadir-class platform, designed for shallow-water operations, is considered particularly suited for stealth missions in constrained maritime environments.

Iranian defense doctrine has long emphasized asymmetric naval warfare, relying on smaller, harder-to-detect vessels and underwater platforms to offset the technological superiority of larger naval fleets.

While some Iranian officials and state media outlets have suggested that these systems present significant challenges to potential adversaries, independent military analysts caution that real-world effectiveness depends on detection capabilities, rules of engagement, and broader escalation thresholds.

The development underscores the growing militarization of maritime chokepoints in the Gulf, where even limited deployments can carry outsized strategic and economic implications due to the concentration of global shipping routes.

No independent confirmation has been provided regarding operational engagement orders or combat readiness conditions at the deployed sites.
