As tensions over trade, Taiwan, technology, and global influence intensify, the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping may determine the future balance of power between Washington and Beijing. By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj | Sulaimani, Iraq | 13 May 2026 — Kurdish Policy Analysis "We don't have permanent allies and we don't have permanent enemies, only our interests are permanent, and we have to follow them." – Henry John Temple. The root of the current Strait of Hormuz tensions is not only about shipping routes or oil prices, but also about the final collapse of the historical US concept towards Beijing. Joe Kent Says Kurdish Leadership Key to Regional Stability and Future Diplomacy

Former U.S. counterterrorism official highlights Kurdistan Region’s strategic role amid escalating Middle East tensions. Joe Kent highlights Kurdistan’s strategic role as tensions rise, calling it a cornerstone of stability and diplomacy in the Middle East

ERBIL, Iraq, April 7 (Kurdish Policy Analysis)

A senior former U.S. counterterrorism official has underscored the critical role of Kurdish leadership in maintaining regional stability and shaping future diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, as tensions continue to rise across the region.

Joe Kent said in recent remarks that the Kurdistan Region remains a key partner for the United States and its allies, particularly in security cooperation and counterterrorism efforts.

Kent emphasized that Kurdish political and security institutions have proven to be reliable actors in a volatile region, contributing to efforts against extremist groups and helping maintain relative stability compared to other parts of Iraq.

The Kurdistan Region, governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government, has long been seen as a strategic hub for Western engagement in Iraq and a base for counterterrorism operations.

Kent noted that continued cooperation with Kurdish leadership will be essential for future diplomatic initiatives, particularly as regional conflicts involving Iran, the United States, and allied actors risk further destabilizing Iraq and neighboring countries.

He added that strengthening ties with Kurdish authorities could help facilitate dialogue, stabilize contested areas, and support long-term political solutions in Iraq.

The remarks come at a time when Iraq faces renewed security concerns and geopolitical pressure, highlighting the Kurdistan Region’s importance as a relatively stable partner in an increasingly uncertain regional landscape.
