As tensions over trade, Taiwan, technology, and global influence intensify, the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping may determine the future balance of power between Washington and Beijing. By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj | Sulaimani, Iraq | 13 May 2026 — Kurdish Policy Analysis "We don't have permanent allies and we don't have permanent enemies, only our interests are permanent, and we have to follow them." – Henry John Temple. The root of the current Strait of Hormuz tensions is not only about shipping routes or oil prices, but also about the final collapse of the historical US concept towards Beijing. However, the 2025 National Security Strategy, released by the White House in November, says this was a historic mistake because China used the assets it accumulated to strengthen itself and compete with the West, not to become their partner. For many years, the United States alone maintained maritime security; The fifth US ship in Manama, Bahrain, worked only to keep o...

Trump Blockade of Iran Triggers Global Shock

A dual geopolitical rupture unfolds as Washington escalates pressure on Tehran while a key Trump ally is ousted in Europe’s most consequential election shift in years.

Kurdish Policy Analysis / SULAIMANI, IRAQ — The United States has begun enforcing a naval blockade on Iranian maritime routes following the collapse of last-minute negotiations in Islamabad, while in Europe, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been voted out after 16 years in power, marking a simultaneous geopolitical shock across two strategic theaters.

The U.S. military confirmed that restrictions on vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports came into effect following the breakdown of talks aimed at preventing further escalation over Iran’s nuclear and regional activities. The move represents a significant tightening of pressure on Tehran at a moment of already elevated tensions in the Gulf.

Vice President JD Vance said negotiations failed due to Iran’s unwillingness to commit to limits on its nuclear capabilities, framing the blockade as a necessary response to stalled diplomacy. Tehran has not yet issued a formal military response, but Iranian officials have previously warned that any disruption to maritime access in the Strait of Hormuz would be treated as an act of escalation.

Oil markets are expected to react sharply to the move, with the Strait of Hormuz — through which a significant share of global crude flows — already a focal point of repeated confrontation between Iran and Western powers.

Separately, in Hungary, voters delivered a decisive defeat to Orbán’s Fidesz party, ending one of Europe’s longest-running nationalist governments. Preliminary results show a strong victory for the opposition Tisza party under Péter Magyar, who campaigned on anti-corruption reforms and closer alignment with the European Union.

Orbán, a long-standing ally of Donald Trump and a central figure in Europe’s right-wing populist movement, conceded defeat following record voter turnout. His government had previously played a key role in blocking EU measures on Ukraine and often positioned Hungary as a strategic veto player within European institutions.

The dual developments come at a politically sensitive moment for Washington, as Trump’s administration faces simultaneous escalation in the Middle East and a weakening of allied political influence in Europe.

Analysts say the convergence of events could signal a broader restructuring of transatlantic political alignment, particularly among nationalist and populist movements that have coordinated informally across borders in recent years.

The long-term impact will depend on whether Iran escalates militarily in response to the blockade and how quickly Hungary’s new leadership repositions itself within the EU’s geopolitical framework.
