War Doesn’t End on the Battlefield: Villages Wins 2026 Top U.S. Military Fiction Award

Robert Inman’s novel on trauma and healing among returning soldiers earns prestigious literary recognition

Kurdish Policy Analysis / SULAIMANI April 18  Author Robert Inman has won the 2026 W.Y. Boyd Literary Novel Award for his book Villages, a work recognized for excellence in American military fiction, organizers said.

The award, presented by the American Library Association, honors the best fiction set during periods when the United States was at war. The prize includes a $5,000 award and citation aimed at encouraging high-quality war-related literature.

Published in 2025 by Livingston Press, an imprint of the University of West Alabama, Villages follows 21-year-old veteran Jonas Boulware as he struggles with trauma after returning from military service in the Middle East.

The novel explores themes of post-traumatic stress, identity, and recovery, portraying the psychological and social challenges faced by veterans reintegrating into civilian life. Judges praised the work for its “authentic and relatable” depiction of trauma and its broader reflection on healing through human connection.

The jury highlighted the novel’s exploration of interconnected lives — from family members to fellow veterans — as central to its narrative strength and emotional impact.

Applications for the 2027 award are due by February 28, according to organizers.
