As tensions over trade, Taiwan, technology, and global influence intensify, the meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping may determine the future balance of power between Washington and Beijing. By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj | Sulaimani, Iraq | 13 May 2026 — Kurdish Policy Analysis "We don't have permanent allies and we don't have permanent enemies, only our interests are permanent, and we have to follow them." – Henry John Temple. The root of the current Strait of Hormuz tensions is not only about shipping routes or oil prices, but also about the final collapse of the historical US concept towards Beijing. However, the 2025 National Security Strategy, released by the White House in November, says this was a historic mistake because China used the assets it accumulated to strengthen itself and compete with the West, not to become their partner. For many years, the United States alone maintained maritime security; The fifth US ship in Manama, Bahrain, worked only to keep o...

IRGC targets Komala headquarters in Kurdistan Region with drone strike - report

Additionally, residents in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik reported hearing explosions around 4 a.m. local time, several hours after the reported explosions in the Biban region.

The IRGC targeted the Surdash camp, an Iranian Kurdish area of the Biban region, where families of Iranian Kurdish opponents live, with two drones, the Kurdistan Regional Government Security Directorate stated on Tuesday.

No casualties were reported, according to the security directorate.

Additionally, residents in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik reported hearing explosions around 4 a.m. local time, several hours after the reported explosions in the Biban region.

Provincial authorities later confirmed the sounds were caused by air defenses intercepting small drones and reconnaissance drones, according to the Students News Network, adding that no impact, damage, or explosion had occurred.

Residents in southern Iran reported hearing explosions early Tuesday morning, as air defense systems were activated across key coastal region, according to local sources and official statements.

Witnesses in Bandar Abbas, Qeshm, and Sirik said blasts occurred around 4 a.m. local time, several hours after earlier reported activity in the Biban region, a contested area linked to Iranian Kurdish oppositions.

According to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Security Directorate, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) conducted a targeted drone strike on the Surdash camp in the Biban region. The area is known to host families of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups.

The statement indicated that two drones were used in the strike. No casualties were reported.

In the ساعات that followed, Iranian provincial authorities clarified that the explosions heard in the south were not the result of direct strikes, but rather defensive interceptions. Air defense systems successfully engaged what were described as small drones and reconnaissance UAVs.

State-affiliated Students News Network reported that no impact sites, damage, or secondary explosions were recorded, reinforcing official claims that the aerial threats were neutralized before reaching their targets.

The sequence of events highlights a growing pattern of low-intensity drone activity and rapid-response air defense measures across Iran’s southern corridor—an area of heightened strategic importance due to its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz.

While the absence of casualties suggests limited immediate escalation, the dual occurance of offensive and defensive drone operations within hours underscores the fragile and increasingly complex security environment spanning Iran’s inside and its Kurdish periphery.
