PJAK calls for strengthening democratic struggle to protect Kurdish language

The Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) called on the Kurdish people to learn their language and dialects in daily life and work through a scientific approach, and to engage with them with sensitivity and awareness, while strengthening their democratic struggle in all important fields in order to protect, reinforce, and develop the Kurdish language. The PJAK also announced its support for the initiative launched in Rojava Kurdistan for the recognition of the Kurdish language.

The PJAK issued a statement today on the occasion of May 15, Kurdish Language Day, saying: “May 15, Kurdish Language Day, is a day to honor the ancient and authentic culture of the Kurdish people. The Kurdish language is an important and valuable part of the cultural diversity of the Middle East. We congratulate all supporters of freedom, patriots, and defenders of the identity and dignity of the Kurdish people on this occasion.”

The statement added: “The Kurdish language is considered one of the oldest, richest, and most vibrant languages in the world, and it is a natural and important means of expressing the values of free, democratic, and humane life. Respecting the Kurdish language and working to develop and strengthen it throughout the four parts of Kurdistan, in the face of the cultural genocide policies pursued by authoritarian regimes, is not merely a cultural duty, but also a moral, political, and intellectual obligation.”

The statement pointed out that the Kurdish people have resisted policies of denial, assimilation, and cultural genocide for more than a hundred years, sacrificing many martyrs in this struggle, while commemorating the martyrs of freedom and the Kurdish language on this occasion.

It further noted: “In addition to its deep awareness of the importance of the struggle for freedom and democracy, the Kurdish people have made tremendous material and moral sacrifices. Thanks to their collective will and extraordinary dedication, they have overcome the stage of cultural annihilation and are now advancing toward full freedom. The Kurdish language, as a fundamental pillar of cultural identity, forms part of humanity’s heritage and enriches the world of languages and cultures.”

The statement explained: “Strengthening and developing our language does not only mean protecting the identity of the Kurdish people, but also represents an influential step toward cultural development and the establishment of genuine and direct democracy in the region. The Kurdish language is the language through which the thousands-year-old cultural legitimacy of the peoples of Zaghros is expressed, and it is also the cradle of human culture in the region. Throughout our people’s struggle, it has become the true language of freedom and democracy. Therefore, any harm inflicted upon this language and culture is unacceptable and affects all peoples of the Middle East.”

It added: “In Eastern Kurdistan and Iran, the Kurdish language has become the language of the struggle for freedom, the development of democratic awareness, and the slogan ‘Woman, Life, Freedom,’ which is full of meaning, and it has achieved significant accomplishments in this regard. Today, Iran is facing a historic phase of transformation, and through radical change, it is necessary to end authoritarian rule and the policies of cultural genocide, and to build a democratic system that respects all nationalities and languages. Moreover, no military option can any longer threaten the Kurdish language and culture with extinction as in the past, because our people will continue their united struggle to protect the Kurdish language.”

The statement emphasized that the development of the Kurdish language and the expansion of its use is a responsibility shared by everyone, stating: “Every home must become a school for learning and promoting the Kurdish language, and every word, text, and aspect of the Kurdish language in all its dialects should be regarded as an act of activism, struggle, and community-building for us.”

The statement called on all civil society activists, intellectuals, teachers, youth, women, and conscious segments of society to strengthen their democratic struggle in all important areas in order to protect, reinforce, and develop the Kurdish language. It also urged the Kurdish people to learn their language and dialects in daily life and work through scientific methods and to engage with them with sensitivity and awareness, while actively participating, during this sensitive period, in the struggle for freedom and democracy. “Only through the collective will of our people can we make every day a day for the development and strengthening of the Kurdish language,” the statement said.

The PJAK concluded its statement by saying: “We congratulate everyone on the occasion of Kurdish Language Day, and we also announce our support for the initiative launched by the Kurdish people in Rojava Kurdistan for the recognition of the Kurdish language.”
