Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Developing Film Adaptation of Afghan War Memoir ‘No Way Out’ for Netflix

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are developing a Netflix adaptation of the Afghan War memoir No Way Out, bringing the brutal Battle of Musa Qala to screen as the Sussexes push deeper into political and military storytelling.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are developing a feature film adaptation of the Afghan war memoir, “No Way Out: The Searing True Story of Men Under Siege,” for Netflix. The book chronicles British Major Adam Jowett’s command of Easy Company, a unit of Paras and Royal Irish Rangers tasked with holding the District Centre of Musa Qala in Afghanistan in July 2006. The film will be produced by Prince Harry, Markle and their Archewell Productions scripted content head Tracy Ryerson.

Prince Harry served two tours of duty in Afghanistan during his decade-long tenure as a member of the British Army.

Matt Charman, the writer who earned an Oscar nomination for “Bridges of Spies,” is writing the script.

“No Way Out” was published by Pan Macmillan in 2019. War reporter Martin Bell called the memoir, “Vivid and brilliantly written: a pulsating account of the battle for Musa Qala, the Rorke’s Drift of our times.” It currently commands a 4.6 out of 5-star rating on Amazon.

The royal couple’s credits include “Cookie Queens,” “Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within,” “Polo,” “Heart of Invictus,” “Live to Lead,” “The Me you Can’t See” and “Stroop: Journey Into the Rhino Horn War.” In addition to “No Way Out,” upcoming projects also include an adaptation of Jasmine Guillory’s romance novel, “The Wedding Date,” and an adaptation of the Carley Fortune romance “Meet Me at the Lake.”

Variety reported in March that Harry and Markle had a falling out with Netflix after the pair failed to produce successful content for the streamer, among other reasons. “No Way Out” is part of Archewell’s first-look deal with Netflix after its overall deal expired.
