Italy awards its highest-ranking honour, the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Italy, to Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani.

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani will receive Italy's highest-ranking honour, the Knight of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Star of Italy, in recognition of his role in strengthening diplomatic and strategic relations between the Kurdistan Region and Italy.

The decoration, the highest rank within the Order of the Star of Italy, will be presented by Italian Ambassador to Iraq Niccolò Fontana on behalf of Italian President Sergio Mattarella, underscoring Rome's appreciation for Barzani's contribution to expanding bilateral cooperation.

The honour comes at a time when Italy continues to play an important role in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region through security cooperation, military training, economic engagement, cultural exchanges, and humanitarian assistance. Italian forces remain among the international coalition partners supporting security efforts in Iraq, while Italian companies have expanded their presence in infrastructure, energy, and development projects across the Kurdistan Region.

For Erbil, the award represents more than a ceremonial recognition. It reflects the Kurdistan Region's growing diplomatic profile in Europe and its efforts to cultivate long-term partnerships with key European powers despite ongoing political and economic challenges within Iraq.
