Kurdish Policy Analysis / SULAYMANIYAH, Iraq — A 20-year-old Kurdish fighter was killed on Wednesday in what local sources described as an Iranian drone strike targeting an opposition-linked camp in the Surdash area near Koya, underscoring persistent cross-border tensions between Iran and Kurdish groups.

The victim, identified as Ghazal Mawlan, originally from Bokan, was reportedly a member of a Kurdish armed faction operating in the border region of the Kurdistan Region.

The strike hit a site associated with Kurdish opposition elements, including factions linked to Komala, in the Surdash district, a mountainous zone near Koya that has repeatedly been targeted in past Iranian operations.

Local officials and security sources have not issued a detailed statement, but the incident is consistent with previous strikes carried out by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps against Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based inside Iraqi territory.


Local social media reported that A drone strike has targeted the headquarters of the Organization of the Toilers of Kurdistan (Komala), an Iranian Kurdish opposition party, in the Surdash sub-district of Dukan, Sulaimaniyah province. Komala military commander Amjad Panahi said the attack struck the party’s base. Below is a video recording of the attack which went viral in Kurdistan social media that killed the young fighter.
