Abdul El-Sayed has scored one of the most closely watched political upsets of the 2026 election cycle, defeating Representative Haley Stevens in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary despite facing more than $60 million in outside spending , much of it from pro-Israel political groups. The victory marks a significant breakthrough for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party and sets up a high-stakes general election contest against Republican Mike Rogers in November. El-Sayed's campaign prevailed even after Stevens received late endorsements from Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and influential national Democrats, including Representative James Clyburn . Inside East Kurdistan's Political Crisis: Alleged Anti-U.S. Statement and Iranian Military Build-Up Raise Regional Alarm

By Dr. Pshtiwan Faraj

Reports of divisions among Iran's Kurdish opposition and heavy military deployments near the Iraq-Iran border signal a potentially dangerous new phase in regional security.

Political divisions inside Iran's Kurdish opposition coincide with reported military deployments along the Iraq-Iran frontier, raising new questions about Tehran's security calculations and the future of Kurdish politics.

Dangerous information; Some parties in East Kurdistan want to issue statements against the United States and in support of Iran

Arsalan Yar Ahmadi, a member of the board of directors of Hangaw Human Rights Monitoring Organization in Iran and East Kurdistan, has revealed important and unexpected information about the political position of the parties in East Kurdistan and warned against issuing a joint statement.
An unexpected statement against the United States
According to Yar Ahmadi, the parties in East Kurdistan, which are members of the Iranian Freedom Congress, are currently preparing a joint statement. The statement is expected to strongly condemn the US military attacks on southern Iran.
"I'm responsible for every letter of my writing"
After the publication of this information and the creation of doubts by some parties, Arsalan Yar Ahmadi confirmed the truth of the news and said: Those friends who believe that it is rumors, can go and ask the officials of their parties. I wrote a post and I am responsible for it literally.”
Domestic pressure is called for
Finally, the member of the board of directors of Hangaw appealed to the cadres and members of these parties and hoped that the internal pressure of the members would prevent the issuance of this statement, which he called a “disaster”. A large gathering in Ruansar and the sending of heavy weapons to the border; What is the Iranian army doing?

Arsalan Yar Ahmadi, a member of the board of directors of Hangaw, said that a large meeting of Iranian army, Basij and Kurdish fighters was held at the army base in Ruansar city on Sunday.
After the meeting, a large army force with heavy weapons has been sent to the town of Quriqala and is likely to be sent to Paveh and the border.

The political landscape of Iran's Kurdish opposition has entered a period of heightened uncertainty after allegations emerged that several East Kurdistan political parties are preparing a joint statement condemning recent U.S. military strikes against Iran. At the same time, reports of significant Iranian military movements toward the western border have fueled speculation that Tehran is preparing for an extended period of instability.

While neither development has been independently verified, together they highlight the increasingly complex position of Kurdish political movements caught between regional rivalries, domestic opposition, and escalating U.S.-Iran tensions.

A Controversial Claim Sparks Debate

Arsalan Yar Ahmadi, a board member of the Hangaw Human Rights Monitoring Organization, publicly claimed that political parties belonging to the Iranian Freedom Congress are drafting a joint statement that would strongly condemn recent U.S. military operations targeting southern Iran.

According to Yar Ahmadi, such a declaration would effectively align sections of the Kurdish opposition with Tehran's narrative at a time when many Iranian opposition groups have instead blamed the Islamic Republic for dragging the country into regional confrontation.

His allegations quickly generated controversy among Kurdish political circles.

When some activists questioned the accuracy of his claims, Yar Ahmadi doubled down.

"Those who believe this is only a rumor should ask the officials of their own parties. I stand behind every word I wrote."

The statement suggests that internal disagreements may already exist within opposition organizations regarding how to position themselves amid escalating regional conflict.

Internal Pressure Inside Kurdish Parties

Yar Ahmadi also urged party members and grassroots activists to pressure their leadership not to issue what he described as a politically damaging declaration.

He warned that publicly condemning Washington while remaining comparatively silent regarding Tehran's policies could undermine the credibility of Kurdish opposition groups among many supporters.

Whether such a joint statement will ultimately be released remains unclear.

However, the controversy itself illustrates the strategic dilemma facing Iranian Kurdish movements.

They must simultaneously:

  • Oppose the Iranian government
  • Avoid appearing aligned with foreign military intervention
  • Maintain international legitimacy
  • Preserve unity among diverse political factions

Balancing these competing priorities has become increasingly difficult as regional tensions intensify.

Military Movements Near the Border

The political controversy comes alongside reports of unusual military activity in western Iran.

According to Yar Ahmadi, Iranian military commanders held a large security meeting on Sunday at an army base in Ravansar (Ruansar) involving members of the Iranian Army, the Basij, and Kurdish auxiliary forces.

Following the meeting, he claimed that substantial military units equipped with heavy weapons were deployed toward Quri Qaleh, with additional movements possibly continuing toward Paveh and nearby border regions.

These reports have not been independently verified, and Iranian authorities have not publicly confirmed the deployments.

Nevertheless, the locations involved are strategically important.

Both Quri Qaleh and Paveh lie close to mountainous routes connecting Iran with Iraq's Kurdistan Region—areas that have historically been sensitive from both military and intelligence perspectives.

Why the Border Matters

Iran has repeatedly strengthened military deployments along its western frontier during periods of heightened regional tension.

Several strategic considerations explain why Tehran closely monitors this area.

Preventing Opposition Infiltration

Iranian Kurdish opposition groups maintain bases inside Iraq's Kurdistan Region.

Tehran has long accused these organizations of conducting cross-border operations.

Although many of these groups have reduced military activity in recent years, Iranian security planners continue to view them as potential threats.

Deterring Foreign Intelligence Operations

The mountainous border has frequently appeared in Iranian security narratives regarding alleged foreign intelligence activity.

Iranian officials have repeatedly accused both Israel and Western intelligence agencies of exploiting Kurdish border regions for surveillance and covert operations.

Whether or not those accusations are substantiated, they influence Iranian military planning.

Preparing for Regional Escalation

Military reinforcement can also serve as a precautionary measure during periods of broader regional instability.

If Iranian leaders fear additional U.S. or Israeli operations, securing internal borders becomes an important defensive priority.

The Kurdish Opposition's Strategic Dilemma

The controversy surrounding the reported statement reflects a broader challenge confronting Kurdish political organizations inside Iran.

Historically, these parties have sought international support for democratic reform, minority rights, and greater political freedoms.

However, external military intervention creates difficult political choices.

Opposition groups generally oppose Tehran's policies.

At the same time, openly supporting foreign military attacks on Iranian territory risks alienating domestic audiences and exposing organizations to accusations of collaborating with outside powers.

Conversely, condemning U.S. strikes too strongly could disappoint supporters who view international pressure as one of the few constraints on the Iranian government.

This balancing act has become increasingly delicate.

Could Tehran Benefit Politically?

Periods of external confrontation often strengthen governments by encouraging national unity.

If opposition groups become divided over how to respond to foreign military action, Tehran could potentially exploit those divisions.

Officials could portray critics of the government as either:

  • insufficiently patriotic, or
  • aligned with foreign interests.

Such narratives have historically appeared during previous regional crises.

Implications for Iraq's Kurdistan Region

Military activity near the border also carries implications for the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.

Any increase in Iranian troop deployments may heighten concerns about:

  • Border security
  • Refugee movements
  • Cross-border military incidents
  • Potential restrictions on frontier crossings
  • Increased surveillance of opposition groups

The Kurdistan Regional Government has generally sought to prevent its territory from becoming a staging ground for regional confrontation, although doing so remains a persistent challenge given its geographic location.

Looking Ahead

Neither the reported political statement nor the alleged military deployments necessarily indicate that a major escalation is imminent.

However, they point to two important trends unfolding simultaneously:

First, Iran's Kurdish opposition appears to be experiencing internal debate over how to respond to intensifying U.S.-Iran tensions.

Second, Tehran may be increasing security preparations along one of its most strategically sensitive frontiers as regional uncertainty persists.

If confirmed, both developments would illustrate how broader geopolitical competition is increasingly reshaping Kurdish politics and border security across the Iran-Iraq frontier.

As tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to evolve, the choices made by Kurdish political movements—and Tehran's military posture along its western border—could become increasingly significant indicators of the next phase of regional competition.

Iranian Freedom Congress: We are against military attacks and hold the Islamic Republic responsible for the crises

The Iranian Freedom Congress, which includes some eastern Kurdish parties, issued an official statement on military tensions in the region, foreign intervention and the right of the Iranian people to self-determination.

The congress also condemned the US and Israeli military attacks on Iranian territory and the Islamic Republic's bellicose policies.

The statement said the Islamic Republic's policies at the regional and international levels have exposed Iran to a devastating war and paved the way for foreign military attacks. The Freedom Congress of Iran said the fighting has killed and injured civilians and destroyed the country's infrastructure, which is considered the national asset of future generations.

Rejecting the false dilemma

The Congress strongly rejects the notion that “an external force must be relied upon to oppose local authority” and emphasizes an independent path. “'No to the Islamic Republic' and 'No to war' are two inseparable facets of the Iranian people's struggle. Standing up against domestic oppression does not mean accepting war, and opposing foreign intervention does not hide the Islamic Republic's responsibility for creating crises and violating human rights.”

international legitimacy and the right to self-determination

According to international law, a government has legitimacy when it represents the true will of its people. Because the Islamic Republic does not represent the Iranian people, its policies should not be considered in the name of the people. The statement stressed that civil society, social movements and democratic forces have the main owners in determining the country's future and no external force can decide for them.

The main demands of the Congress

The statement calls for urgent steps, including:

immediately end hostilities and prevent the escalation of military conflicts.

Oppose any foreign military intervention in Iran's political future.

Officially recognize the role of democratic forces as key players in the power transfer process.

Supporting civil society, women's movements, workers, students and free media.

Unconditional release of political prisoners and suspension of the death penalty.

The congress expressed its condolences to the victims of the war and once again condemned the US and Israeli military attacks on Iranian territory.

The Freedom Congress of Iran, which includes some Kurdish parties, last night announced that they want to issue a statement against the United States.
