The Kurdistan Region has exported locally grown onions to international markets for the first time, marking a historic milestone in its agricultural transformation and reinforcing the Kurdistan Regional Government's strategy to diversify the economy beyond oil.
The Kurdistan Region exports locally grown onions internationally for the first time, marking a major step toward agricultural exports, economic diversification, and regional trade.
A Historic First for Kurdish Agriculture
For decades, the Kurdistan Region has been known primarily for its oil resources. Today, however, another sector is quietly rewriting the Region's economic story.
The Kurdistan Region has successfully completed its first-ever international export of locally produced onions, shipping 3,000 tons from Bardarash in Duhok Governorate to TĂĽrkiye.
While the shipment may appear modest compared to global agricultural trade, officials describe it as a landmark achievement that reflects the growing competitiveness of Kurdish agriculture and the Region's broader ambition to diversify its economy beyond hydrocarbons.
The export was facilitated by Zangenan Company and represents the first international shipment under the Kurdistan Regional Government's expanding agricultural export strategy.
More Than an Onion Shipment
Officials stress that the export is not simply a commercial transaction.
Instead, it represents an important milestone within the Kurdistan Agriculture Export Initiative (KAEI)—a long-term strategy designed to expand domestic, regional, and international markets for Kurdish agricultural products.
The initiative seeks to:
- Increase agricultural exports
- Improve farmers' incomes
- Encourage private-sector investment
- Expand non-oil exports
- Strengthen food security
- Reduce dependence on oil revenues
As the Region pursues economic diversification, agriculture is increasingly becoming one of the pillars of sustainable growth.
Bardarash: A Rising Agricultural Hub
The onions exported to TĂĽrkiye were grown in Bardarash, one of the Kurdistan Region's most productive agricultural districts.
Located in Duhok Governorate, Bardarash has become a major producer of:
- Onions
- Potatoes
- Wheat
- Various field crops
Thousands of farming families depend on agricultural production in the district, making improved access to export markets an important source of long-term income and economic stability.
Government Support for Farmers
Speaking to Kurdistan24, Ahmed Jamil, Director General of Agriculture for Duhok Governorate, described the shipment as part of the Kurdistan Regional Government's broader effort to connect local producers with international markets.
According to Jamil, government institutions continue to support farmers by helping them reach buyers beyond Iraq's borders while encouraging improvements in production quality and export standards.
He expressed confidence that the successful shipment would open the door for additional exports to TĂĽrkiye and other neighbouring countries.
Agriculture Becomes a Strategic Economic Sector
The onion export builds upon a series of recent successes for Kurdish agriculture.
Over the past few years, products from the Kurdistan Region—including:
- Pomegranates
- Apples
- Honey
- Potatoes
have increasingly reached markets across Iraq, the Gulf, and neighbouring countries.
These exports demonstrate that Kurdish agricultural products are becoming more competitive regionally while helping diversify the Region's export portfolio.
Analysis: Diversifying Beyond Oil
Although oil will remain the backbone of the Kurdistan Region's economy for years to come, agriculture is steadily emerging as an increasingly important strategic sector.
The significance of the onion shipment extends well beyond its commercial value.
It demonstrates that Kurdish farmers are beginning to integrate into regional supply chains, creating opportunities for long-term export growth while reducing reliance on domestic markets.
As climate change, food security, and supply chain resilience become central geopolitical issues, countries with strong agricultural production are likely to enjoy increasing strategic importance.
For the Kurdistan Region, expanding agricultural exports offers multiple benefits:
- Greater rural employment
- Increased foreign exchange earnings
- Enhanced food security
- Stronger private-sector development
- Reduced dependence on oil revenues
Regional Trade and Economic Diplomacy
The choice of TĂĽrkiye as the first export destination also reflects the deep economic relationship between Erbil and Ankara.
TĂĽrkiye remains one of the Kurdistan Region's largest trading partners, making it a natural gateway for future agricultural exports into wider regional and European markets.
If current policies continue, officials hope additional Kurdish products will gradually establish a permanent presence in regional and international supply chains.
Looking Ahead
Officials describe the export of 3,000 tons of onions not as the culmination of an initiative, but as its beginning.
The Kurdistan Regional Government aims to expand agricultural exports through improved logistics, better quality standards, stronger private-sector partnerships, and wider market access.
If these objectives are achieved, agriculture could become one of the Kurdistan Region's fastest-growing non-oil sectors over the coming decade.
In a region often defined by energy politics and geopolitical conflict, the first international shipment of Kurdish-grown onions offers a different narrative—one centred on economic resilience, rural development, and sustainable growth.
