The move would add to the existing U.S. naval presence, where at least two carrier strike groups are already operating in the Gulf amid rising hostilities with Tehran. ABC News reported that the additional carrier could be deployed imminently as part of a show of force.

Recent weeks have seen a series of missile and drone strikes targeting U.S. forces and allied infrastructure, as well as retaliatory operations by Washington and its partners.
