Assessment of the security situation in Iraq
Armed groups carried out two effective attacks yesterday and today; The first was directed to the US consulate in Erbil yesterday, and the second today in the ports of Basra. The US Embassy in Baghdad has warned its citizens not to travel to Iraq.
1. The possibility of a US military operation in the coming hours or days, inside Iraq or in the region, to respond to these attacks that targeted the US Consulate in Erbil, and to restore the force to prevent and stop these attacks through a tough response.
2. The United States may conduct this operation to target specific individuals accused of involvement in these attacks, or may also bombard bases and military bases belonging to those parties. We don’t know what’s going on, what I’m talking about is not verifiable information, but just an assessment of the situation and a reading of the reality within the open possibilities.
3. It is a signal to the Iraqi government that you have a military and security responsibility and must not be delayed in order to control the security of the country, otherwise we will do it ourselves to protect the interests of foreign investments and diplomatic envoys.
4. An attack on Erbil, then an attack on the ports of Basra with drone bombings, all of which indicate that some of these groups will not comply with the words of the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and non-compliance means weakening the state.
5. It is a message to Mr Zaidi: the real test has now begun; Either the state must move and restore confidence by force, abandon compromise statements and confine the decision to fight to yourself and parliament, or the situation will get worse and the state will not recover under you.
6. It is very clear that there is a side that is practically against the strategic cooperation between Iraq and the United States. It is also clear that you will face fierce political conflict inside Iraq as a result of this visit. So if you want to succeed, you must first convince your people and then the international community that you are strong and can run your country in a real and tough way, otherwise you will fail; The decision is yours.
7. Allowing the US side to respond means weakness of the state. The duty to maintain internal security must be an Iraqi duty. If you, as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, do not maintain security, then outsiders will come and violate the sovereignty of the state and weaken the state and your position.
