Uncovering Hidden Files: Iraq Launches Financial Audit of the Green Zone and Rixos Hotel

Iraq's anti-corruption campaign is entering a new phase. Authorities have launched financial audits into the Green Zone and the Rixos Hotel, signaling increased scrutiny of high-profile investment projects and alleged public fund embezzlement. 

Iraqi political and economic centers are facing a new wave of financial reviews and audits after informed government sources said government committees intend to review investment cases involving suspected embezzlement of public funds.

At the forefront of these expected investigations is the case of the seizure of important strategic land in the green zone of central Baghdad, which was sold at very low prices, most of which were reportedly given to Khamis Khanjar, leader of the Siyada coalition.

The luxury hotel project "Rixos Baghdad" is at the forefront of this hot file and the committees are investigating it.

A government source said the investigation will expand to include other complex cases related to the seizure and change of ownership of large areas of agricultural land in the Baghdad belt, especially in Yousfiya and Mahmudiya have been given.

"Future investigations will review all investment files awarded during the Kazemi and Sudanese governments, in addition to auditing the contracting mechanism and the procedures involved in awarding these projects," the source said.

"The most prominent cases that will be opened are the case of the Rixos Hotel in the Green Zone, as well as the case of agricultural land in Yousfiya, Mahmudiya and other areas," he said.

"Most of the investments have been donated to Khamis Khanjar and political figures close to him," the source said, adding that "the special committees are investigating the ownership of the Rixos Hotel and those who occupied the land.

Meanwhile, former MP Amir Mamouri revealed important information about the allocation of land for the Rixos hotel and apartments project in the Green Zone to a Qatari company, stressing the existence of political agreements that prevented competition and deprived the state of huge financial revenues.

"The land donated to the Qatari company, which covers an area of ​​19.5 acres in the green zone, was originally allocated for a government project to build a hotel under the control of the Iraqi state and become a source of financial revenue," he said.

"The implementing company (Iraqi Real Estate Exception), which belongs to Qatari Exception Holding, has worked to build between 200 and 270 residential and tourist apartments," he said billion dinars that have gone into the pockets of the ruling parties and the investor.”
