PAK Blames Iran After Son of Kurdish Opposition Leader Seriously Wounded in Erbil Shooting

Mukri Yezdanpena, the son of PAK leader Hussein Yezdanpena, remains in serious condition after unidentified gunmen opened fire near his home in Erbil. The party accuses Iran of orchestrating the attack, but Tehran has not commented and Kurdish authorities are investigating.

 PAK has accused Iran of attempting to assassinate Mukri Yezdanpena, the son of party leader Hussein Yezdanpena, after he was critically wounded in a shooting in Erbil.

The Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), an Iranian Kurdish opposition group based in Iraq's Kurdistan Region, has accused Iran of attempting to assassinate the son of its leader after he was seriously wounded in an armed attack in Erbil early Tuesday.

Mukri Yezdanpena, 27, the son of PAK leader Hussein Yezdanpena, was shot near his home shortly after 1:00 a.m. local time, according to party officials. He was rushed to a hospital in Erbil, where he remains in serious condition.

Kurdistan Region authorities have not publicly identified the attackers or announced any preliminary findings from their investigation.

Shooting Near Family Home

Edib Khalidian, a member of PAK's Central Executive Committee, told Rudaw that the attack occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. near Mukri Yezdanpena's residence in Erbil.

According to Khalidian, Mukri—who serves as the head of foreign relations for the Kurdistan National Army, PAK's military wing—was targeted by an armed assailant and sustained serious injuries.

Other local reports said he suffered a gunshot wound to the head before being transported to hospital for emergency treatment.

Party spokesman Khalil Nadri separately described the incident as an assassination attempt and confirmed that Mukri remains under medical care.


PAK Accuses Iran

PAK directly blamed Iran for the shooting.

"An agent affiliated with the Islamic Republic of Iran attempted to assassinate Mukri Yezdanpena," Khalidian told Rudaw.

He added that the party sees Tehran as the principal suspect.

"We have no enemy other than Iran. Therefore, we see the Islamic Republic of Iran as the primary culprit in every similar incident," Khalidian said.

PAK has provided no publicly available evidence to support its allegation, and Kurdish security authorities have not attributed responsibility for the attack.

Iranian authorities have not commented on the accusations.

A Pattern of Alleged Targeting

The latest shooting comes weeks after another incident involving PAK.

According to Khalidian, party member Soran Mohammadzadeh was killed in his home last month. PAK also blamed Iran for that killing, although Iranian officials denied no involvement publicly, and no official investigation has attributed responsibility.

The party argues that Tuesday's attack fits a broader pattern of violence targeting Iranian Kurdish opposition figures operating from the Kurdistan Region.

Longstanding Tensions

PAK is one of several Iranian Kurdish opposition organizations headquartered in Iraq's Kurdistan Region.

Relations between Tehran and these groups have remained tense for years.

Iran has repeatedly accused Kurdish opposition organizations of conducting cross-border attacks and has launched missile and drone strikes against their bases in northern Iraq, arguing that they pose security threats.

The opposition groups deny conducting attacks inside Iran and say they are being targeted for political reasons.

The Iraqi federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government have previously condemned cross-border military operations as violations of Iraq's sovereignty.

Investigation Continues

The circumstances surrounding Tuesday's shooting remain under investigation.

Authorities have not announced any arrests, identified suspects, or confirmed a motive.

Investigators are expected to examine surveillance footage, forensic evidence, and witness testimony to determine who carried out the attack and whether it was politically motivated.

Until official findings are released, responsibility for the shooting remains unconfirmed.

Regional Implications

The attack is likely to heighten concerns over the security of Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the Kurdistan Region and could further complicate relations between Erbil, Baghdad, and Tehran.
